Christine Wee has been a vital member of the barbershop and choral community of Oahu for many years. A music teaching professional, she served as the Fine Arts Teacher and Choral Director at Pauoa Elementary School from 1997 until 2014, when she began teaching music at Mililani Mauka Elementary School. She directs the school choir (Mauka Singers) and the ukulele club (Mauka Players). Each week she teaches eight hundred children the joy of music.
She first became part of the Na Leo Lani family of singers in 1996, always taking advantage of educational opportunities and serving in a variety of chorus leadership positions. She maintained a dual membership with the Greater Auckland Chorus 2003-2004 and has sung lead in several quartets.
She served as Director of Na Leo Lani from 2010 until 2015, taking the chorus to four regional competitions. At the fourth competition, Na Leo Lani placed #1 in the Open Competition and won the Audience Choice Award. Even after job and family responsibilities took precedence in her life in 2014, she maintained strong ties with Na Leo Lani.
Christine returned as Director of the Na Leo Lani Chorus in 2019 with renewed enthusiasm, a broader skill set, and a commitment to excellence. She is dedicated to expanding the presence of barbershop harmony in the Oahu music community.
In 2022, Christine was among the first-ever recipients of Sweet Adelines International’s Small and Midsized Chorus Directors Scholarships. The financial support enabled her to attend SAI’s July 2022 International Education Symposium (IES) in San Antonio, Texas. Congratulations on this well-deserved honor, Chris! Your commitment to lifelong learning makes Na Leo Lani a better chorus.
