Mahalo, Lanakila Senior Center!

We had a great time this week performing at the Lanakila Senior Center. Like the expression “Imua a loaʻa ka lei o ka lanakila” (Go forth and win the lei of victory), singing for the public always feels like a win.

Mahalo nui loa to the Lanakila Senior Center for being a great audience and inviting us to lunch afterward.

Honoring Veterans

On Armistice Day, November 11 (Veterans Day in the U.S.), Na Leo Lani performed for residents of the Plaza Hawai’i at Punchbowl and celebrated at our evening rehearsal with songs and colors honoring those who have served. Click here for a FB reel of our Plaza pics, and see below for our rehearsal photo.

Many thanks to Suzanne for the group photo!

Celebrating World Singing Day

On October 21, Na Leo Lani joined with members of Honolulu Blend Show Chorus and men from Sounds of Aloha to celebrate World Singing Day.

Following a picnic and talk story time, we circled up and sang. The gorgeous surroundings of Kapiolani Park and Diamond Head were especially inspiring as we harmonized tunes we knew in common and new songs we learned on the spot.

Special thanks to HBSC director, Stephanie Brictson, for organizing this event, as well as to NLL members who attended: Jojo, Anna, Yvonne, Charley, Deb, Summer, Rosie and Chris, and dual NLL and HSBC members Yvonne and Charley.

We love harmonizing with all of you!

Halloween hijinks

Witches and devils and starfish, oh my! At this week’s rehearsal, we sang with gusto and showed off our Halloween spirit at the same time.

We also marked the third week of our Sing With Us for the Holidays program. If you have a special place in your heart (and lungs) for Christmas carols and other festive winter music, come join us! See HERE for more info about SWUFTH 2023.

Cultivating harmony

This week is National Farmers Day, so we dedicated our rehearsal to farmers, whose hard work enables us to eat, live, and, of course, sing!

It was also the first week of our Sing With Us for the Holidays (SWUFTH!) program. Three wonderful singers joined us for the fun. See HERE for details if you love singing and want to find out more about our holiday chorus program.

Straw hats, sun hats, trowels, and . . . a mini pitchfork? Watch out, Earth, Na Leo Lani means business when it comes to growing fun.
Welcome to our SWUFTH participants — we love singing with you!

Hip hip hooray for our new tenor!

A warm welcome to new Sweet Adeline, Rose, who was confirmed by the chorus as a new Na Leo Lani member this week. Rose brings her melodious voice, warm smile, and previous choral experience to our tenor section. We are thrilled to have her and look forward to many happy musical moments together!

“SWUFTH” 2023 starts October 11. Come join the fun!

Arrrrrr, mateys!

With our “theme” rehearsals each week, you’ll never know what incarnation of your chorus mates will appear. This past week we had Captain Hook and a merry crew of shipmates “aaarrrrr”-ing enthusiastically.

Weekly themes are an activity our Music Team started during the pandemic to keep chorus members engaged and eager to see each other every week during the long, long months (nearly two years!) that we were rehearsing solely on Zoom. The themes proved so popular, we’ve kept up the practice ever since!

Although it’s definitely not necessary to come dressed up in the color or concept of the week, about a third of us usually do so, and some of our members really get into it (you know who you are, Yvonne and Rosie!), with humorous costumes and festive style.

Regardless of whether you’re adorned in pirate gear or just channeling your inner Jack Sparrow with a wink and a smile, the themes are a fun way to give shape to the evening’s activities, from our physical and vocal warmups to our customary photo op at the end of the night.

Enjoy the latest pic below, plus a video clip of four of our longtime members and former quartet-ers assembled for a pop-up quartet — “Sugarcane”!

Doing their best to look fiercesome! Don’t be afraid; these gals sing sweetly when they aren’t “aaaaarring” with gusto.

Supporting our Barbershop Brothers!

Na Leo Lani recently had the opportunity to celebrate the musical talents of our brother chorus on O’ahu, Sounds of Aloha, at a Friends and Family performance. The men were putting the final touches on preparations for the 2023 Pan-Pacific International Convention in Auckland, New Zealand.

To make sure they kept their strength up on their journey and to infuse their singing with local flavor, we presented them a basket of local kine goodies — iso peanuts, arare, and more. 🙂 See photos below.

Since then, we heard back from the men that they had a wonderful time onstage and off. In addition to SOA’s performance, four Hawai’i quartets took part, and one of them, H4, was awarded the silver medal for Pan Pacific senior quartets!
