Irish eyes were smiling this week as we sported many shades of green and welcomed a new tenor, Terry, to the chorus. Our tenor section is growing, and we couldn’t be happier! 🍀

What a busy mind- and lung-expanding weekend we had, thanks to our excellent coaching workshop with Kathy Scheel. Thank you so much to all our Na Leo Lani members for pitching in (and pitching up!) to make this a great event, and a special mahalo nui loa to Suzanne for hosting the weekend sessions in such elegant surroundings!

This week and last, we had the enormous pleasure of two special guest coaches, Kumu Hula Lauren Kanoelani Chang Williams of Hālau Nā Pua Hala, and Sweet Adelines Master Director Kathy Scheel of Oregon Spirit Chorus. Kumu Lauren offered vital guidance on pronunciation and interpretation and inspired us with her beautiful hula. Kathy Scheel filled us with energy and excitement and underscored the importance of exacting attention detail as we prepare for our upcoming contest performance in Reno. Thank you so much for your expertise and insights, Kumu Lauren and Kathy!
See below for a short video clip and photos of these special events.

Clean out your closet and help Na Leo Lani raise money at the same time for our upcoming competition in Reno, Nevada! Donate your new or used household goods and clothing to our MARCH 2024 Savers “FUNdraiser” and Savers will pay us by the pound for whatever we donate!
All our donations have to be delivered to Savers in one fell swoop on March 9th at 11:00 am, so please bring your donations to our Wednesday night rehearsals between now and March 6, or contact Anna at naleolanichorus [at] gmail.com to drop them off before hand.
If you are not a chorus member and but have items you would like to donate, please pass the goods along to your favorite Na Leo Lani member or contact Anna at naleolanichorus[at]gmail.com. You are welcome to drop off your donation items and sit in on our rehearsal after — prospective members are always welcome! Visit our “Join Us” page for our rehearsal location info and more.
Donations of clothing should be in large plastic bags, tied shut. Hard items such as dishes, knicknacks, small electric appliances (e.g., toasters, etc), and kitchenware should be boxed tied or taped shut. If you are donating larger items like small bookcases or dressers, please tie or tape the drawers and shelves so they won’t fall out.

Rehearsal fell on Valentine’s Day this week, so what better reason to sing our favorite love songs, including “Let Me Call You Sweetheart.”
We had other reasons to feel the love as well — we have two new members, Nicole (tenor) and Kristine (lead)! Welcome, ladies! Let the fun begin, and let our chords ring!

This week we hailed our January birthday celebrants, Chris and Nora, who wore the birthday sash with aplomb. In keeping with the theme of the week — “National Backwards Day” — they will now officially begin aging in reverse, like Benjamin Button. But we in Na Leo Lani already know that singing with a chorus is the secret to long life and a youthful spirit!
Congratulations, ladies, on another trip ‘round the sun, and may all your days be harmonious!

We were thrilled to welcome seven guests, including new faces and old friends, at this week’s Membership Night. From the ribbon twirling warmups to a spirited round of tags, it was a nonstop evening of singing, laughter, and fun.
In an interlude between working on our contest songs and a hilarious round-robin game of Betty Boop (and Popeye and Wolf!) (see pic below), members shared how they came to Na Leo Lani and what they love about it.
Rosie spoke of how singing with the chorus had been a source of solace and uplift after her mother’s passing and a long stint volunteering at Hospice Hawaii. Summer, April, and others said they loved the sense of community they have found at NLL. JoAnne — hands down our most radiant and glamorous member — described how singing with Na Leo Lani has kept her young. She is now 88, and her daughter tells her she should never quit! And proving that we are never too old to expand our skill set and build our résumés, Ruth, now in her nineties, imparted how being a part of Na Leo Lani for so many years had put her in line for a leadership position at her assisted living facility, where she now heads the hymn-singing group.
Young or old, singing in harmony is our secret to feeling connected and finding joy!
Thanks so much, ladies, for making our January membership night a success. Let’s continue to grow!

Wednesday, January 24, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Singers of all experience, styles, and backgrounds welcome!

Put away those sparkly lights, holiday hats and festive decorations — it’s back to rehearsal this week and time to SING IN THE NEW YEAR! Whether you are a member coming back after our two-week break, a prospective member, or a singing sister just passing through town, please see our Calendar of Events for our January rehearsal times and dates.
In the meantime, here’s a toast to our December birthday gals — Hauʻoli Lā Hānau! – we love you lots!

Many of our members have been singing with Na Leo Lani for years. Enjoy this 2006 Honolulu Star Bulletin blast from the past featuring former long-running quartet, the Skylarks, just in time for Valentine’s Day!
